Guangzhou, also known as Suì, Yangcheng and Huacheng, is the capital and sub-provincial city of Guangdong Province. It is a national center city and a world-famous port city, as well as a significant economic, financial, trade, transportation, exhibition, and shipping center in China. Since the Qin Dynasty, Guangzhou has been the administrative center of the county, prefecture, and government. For more than 2,000 years, it has been the political, military, economic, cultural, and educational center of southern China. In 1982, Guangzhou was announced by the Chinese State Council as one of the first national historical and cultural cities of China.
As one of the largest and oldest foreign trade ports and starting points of the Maritime Silk Road in China, Guangzhou is known as the "Millennium Commercial Capital." With a large number of foreigners residing, it is also known as the "Third World Capital."
Guangzhou covers a total area of 7,434 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 11 districts. It has a maritime subtropical monsoon climate, with warm and rainy weather, sufficient light and heat, and evergreen plants throughout the year.
Located in the southern part of mainland China, the central and southern part of Guangdong Province, and the northern edge of the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou is the southern gate of China, an international comprehensive transportation hub, and one of the three major comprehensive gateway cities in China designated by the State Council. It is also known as one of the "Big Four" cities in China, along with Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Its social, economic, and cultural radiation extends to Southeast Asia. It is the core city of the Greater Bay Area, the Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, and a hub city of the Belt and Road Initiative.
